薬師寺東塔は天武天皇の発願（680年頃）に始まり、平城遷都後の718年に現在地で完成したと伝えられます。南都七大寺のひとつとして栄え、度重なる戦火や火災を経ながらも法灯を護持してきました。特に東塔（730年完成）は「凍れる音楽」と称される優美な三重塔で、世界遺産にも登録されております。

高台脇に覗く粗目の胎土は、花崗岩を含む丹波の山土をほとんど精製せずに使うことで得られる野趣そのものです。厚めに削り残した高台がどっしりと器を支え、抹茶を点てた際の安定感を高めています。焼成は三昼夜以上薪を焚き続ける登り窯で行われ、炎の流れや灰の降り方が一点一点異なる唯一無二の景色を刻み込みました。
